Stop Stampedes - Caution Urged Around Cows

We all know that bulls are bad news, but there has been a recent spate of people being attacked by cows whilst out walking their dog. Few people realise that cows, particularly those protecting newly-born calves, can be dangerous.

You should normally keep your dog on a lead whenever near farm animals. But in these cases that could have led to problems. The cows may have been trying to drive off the dogs to protect their young. So what can you do in such a situation?

Firstly think twice about walking through a field of cows and calves, but if you find yourself in a field of "suddenly wary" cattle then move away as carefully and quietly as possible. If with a dog on a lead and feeeling threatened, let the dog run free - the dog will outrun the cattle. Those without canine companions should do the same: move away calmly, do not panic and make no sudden noises. The cows will normally leave you alone once they establish that you pose no threat.

Rain Check - Which Magazine Test

Marmot Precip Jacket - Top of the Pile in Which Magazines Waterproof Jacket Test

Best Buy - Marmot Precip Jacket The best jacket in our test was the Marmot PreCip - a great value option. This is a lighweight, simple shell jacket that would be a good choice for fair-weather walkers. Highly waterproof and breathable (made from Marmot's durable PreCip coated polyurethane fabric), the jacket also has zips in the armpits for extra ventilation. The hood has a good peak on it for rain protection and can be tucked away when not needed. The jacket comes in good colours, and as a bonus, will pack up very small to fit into a rucksack.

What the others have said:-

Trail Magazine - Its Good:- The Precip is a modern classic, thanks to its great price and features that make it ideal for those travelling light and fast in almost any activity. the Precip is made from an extremely waterproof fabric, while mesh pockets and pitzips improve condensation control, which is worth having when biking or running. the front zip also gets a double stormflap to improve water resistance in the worst weather. The Precip is an average length for thos type of jacket with a slightly scooped tail to protect the back when biking. Movement in the sleeves is very good and it's easy to access the two cavernous chest pockets while wearing a rucksack. the hood can be rolled into the collar, which is ideal for bikers, runners and climbers, and on the head movement of the hood is good too. Verdict:- If you've just got £70 to spend and want a lightweight jacket for running, biking, climbing and hiking this is great!.
